Volunteer Program

FLOWER also actively runs a volunteer program. Since our incorporation in 2008, we have hosted a number of volunteers and interns from the USA, Australia, Canada, Denmark and Norway. FLOWER specializes in tailoring placements to the needs of local partners and interns. We are able to do this by limiting the number of volunteers and interns we select and ensuring each placement is given adequate supervision and attention. To date we are able to offer placements in the areas of human rights, public health, and education. However we are always open to discussing other possibilities depending on the needs of the community and the skills of incoming interns.

FLOWER offers placements ranging from 3 weeks - 6 months in length. All placements are in the community of Asamankese in the Eastern Region of Ghana. We do not have firm start and end dates but rather work with interns to determine an appropriate time frame. We are quite flexible on dates provided we have significant notice to prepare. We currently charge CAD$140 per week for placements. This fee includes the following:

• Airport pickup
  
• Airport drop-off
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily
• Private Twi language lessons
  
• Comfortable accommodation in a private room with a local host family
  
• 24/7 in-country support
• Informal assistance setting up pleasure travel within Ghana (advice, booking assistance, etc.)
  
• Comprehensive orientation sent pre-departure
• Assistance completing academic paperwork as needed

This fee does not include airfare, insurance, communication expenses (phone / internet) or local travel expenses. In addition to this fee we also require a $500 donation to FLOWER per placement. This donation will be used to run a special project in the community during your stay (ex.  spring break camp, girls club conference, school supply donation, sports event, etc.) and will be determined between the volunteer and FLOWER.

You can expect a reply within 5 business days. Provided your resume and cover letter meet our basic criteria, our volunteer coordinator, Erin Anderson, will then contact you to set up a Skype or phone interview to further determine if this placement is a good match for you.
